Area homeless population to be counted next week

The Homeless Coalition of Northeast Alabama says they will conduct the survey on Wednesday in and around both Anniston and Gadsden.

The coalition says in a statement today that homeless individuals and families will be surveyed along with those at risk for homelessness and agencies who provide services to the homeless.

The Homeless Coalition of Northeast Alabama gathers data about the homeless each January to determine the needs of that population and helps develop policies and obtain funding to address related issues.

Matthew Tyson is the president of the local homeless awareness group The Right Place. He says definitions of homelessness by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development vary but he estimates between 350 and 400 people deal with homelessness in Calhoun County on any given night.

If you know of a homeless person or family, please contact Shawn Edgar at 256-231-7731 to take part in next week’s survey.
