Chief deputy Matthew Wade with the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday said actions taken by deputy Benjamin Kiser warrant him being awarded Life Saving and Valor medals.
According to a release from the sheriff’s office, Kiser was patrolling U.S. 431 in Saks on Tuesday when he saw a vehicle laying on its side in a ditch. A mother and at least one child were seriously injured and all four occupants of the vehicle were unable to get out, according to the statement.
The vehicle caught fire while Kiser was assessing injures of the victims and used a fire extinguisher to control the flames until the Anniston Fire Department arrived.
Details of the injuries sustained by the four victims were not immediately available on Wednesday. Attempts to reach Wade on Wednesday afternoon were unsuccessful. Wade said in the statement that Kiser was able to save the lives of that mother and her three children.
