Greenbrier Dear Rd. upgrades begin, expected to last 60 days

(WDNG) – The outside lane of westbound traffic on Greenbrier Dear Road was closed to traffic on Tuesday afternoon as planned upgrades begin at the top of the mountain. Orange cones were seen directing drivers away from crews removing guardrails shortly after noon.

Anniston Public Works director Bob Dean said the work is part of the Metropolitan Planning Organization project to resurface and upgrade parts of the major east-west thoroughfare connecting south Anniston with Golden Springs. The work will take place between Hillyer Robinson Industrial Parkway in the east to Christine Avenue to the west.

Dean said drivers using Greenbrier Dear can expect lane closures while crews perform the work. “Barring any issues, the road should remain open (to traffic),” Dean said when asked if any road closures can be expected. He said work should last between 60 and 90 days and emphasized that weather will determine how long crews take to complete the work.

Design on the upgrades to Greenbrier Dear Road began more than two years ago. According to city engineer Kevin Shley in February 2013, 80 percent of the more than $590,000 price tag will be covered by federal grant money. The remaining 20 percent–about $118,000–will be paid for by the city.
