Forecasts of cold, ice prompt schools to delay Tuesday classes

The National Weather Service in Birmingham on Monday placed Calhoun County under a Winter Weather Advisory until 9 a.m. Tuesday morning. Precipitation is expected to move into the state this afternoon and meet with cold air that is already in place. Forecasters on Monday morning expect an area along and north of the Interstate 20 corridor to be most affected.

The National Weather Service expects an 80 percent chance of precipitation in Anniston overnight Monday with freezing rain, sleet, and snow possible. Road conditions may deteriorate overnight with up to one-tenth of an inch of ice accumulation possible.

The Calhoun County Schools, Anniston City Schools, Oxford City Schools and Jacksonville City Schools will delay classes by three hours on Tuesday morning. The Donoho School will also delay classes by three hours on Tuesday. Piedmont City Schools will delay classes until 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning.

Low temperatures all week are expected to drop below freezing, according to the National Weather Service. More winter weather could affect Calhoun County by midweek.
