Public hearing on proposed annexation into Jacksonville scheduled for Thursday

The Jacksonville City Council will be holding a public hearing this week concerning the proposed annexation of some unincorporated communities into the city. Earlier this month, The Anniston Star reported a dozen residents who live just outside of the city limits attended a city council meeting to tell council members they did not want to be annexed into the city.

Residents in these unincorporated communities reportedly fear building codes could limit what property owners could do on their property. Jacksonville Mayor Johnny Smith said the city began considering annexation because some children outside city limits are zoned for Jacksonville schools but property taxes paid by their parents goes to the county school system, according to The Star.

The Jacksonville City Council will hold the public meeting at the Jacksonville Community Center on Thursday evening at 6 p.m. Information and maps are publicly available on the city’s website at jacksonville-al.org
