Crime in the Model City declined by more than 8 percent in 2014, according to a Friday statement from Anniston Public Information Officer Aziza Jackson. A 16.5 percent decline in crime was reported in 2013, contributing to a combined 24.65 percent drop in the overall crime rate in two years.
Crime was down in six of seven reported offense categories which include homicides, sexual assaults and robberies, according to the statement. Jackson says the creation of the Citizen’s Advisory Committee in 2014 and the shutting down of a major drug operation in south Anniston have contributed to the decrease in crimes.
Mayor Vaughn Stewart thanked the Anniston Police Department for their tireless efforts in reducing the overall crime rate for a second year in a row.
